SHA-256 Generator

Create a 256-bit (32-byte) hash string value from an arbitrary length input string. SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm) is a cryptographic hashing function, which by definition means that it is only computed in one direction and it is not possible to "reverse" it back to its original form. SHA-256 is one of the successor hash functions to SHA-1, and is one of the strongest hash functions available.

What is SHA-256?

SHA-256 algorithm is one flavor of SHA-2 (Secure Hash Algorithm 2), which was created by the National Security Agency in 2001 as a successor to SHA-1. SHA-256 is a patented cryptographic hash function that outputs a value that is 256 bits long. What is hashing? In encryption, data is transformed into a secure format that is unreadable unless the recipient has a key. In its encrypted form, the data may be of unlimited size, often just as long as when unencrypted.

What is Message Digest ?

A message digest is a fixed size numeric representation of the contents of a message, computed by a hash function. A message digest can be encrypted, forming a digital signature. Messages are inherently variable in size.
Message Digest is used to ensure the integrity of a message transmitted over an insecure channel (where the content of the message can be changed). The message is passed through a Cryptographic hash function. This function creates a compressed image of the message called Digest.
